Your days are filled with hard work and stress, and you come home at night wanting nothing but a good night's sleep. Chances are, if you don't have the right bed, it isn't going to happen no matter how badly you want it. You know you need a new bed, but you are lost in a forest of styles and models. You may or may not think of a pedestal bed, but maybe you should look into them. Although it's hard to find them in standard sizes, a pedestal bed might just be the best purchase you make in your lifetime.

Maybe you've heard pedestal beds called platform beds. They are both the same thing. Basically a pedestal bed is a rectangular box which uses panels, connectors, posts, and fasteners in configurations designed to support weight evenly and comfortably.

Building Your Own Pedestal Bed Frame

To start building your own pedestal bed frame, you need to assemble all of the materials you will need. Your list of supplies should include a sketch plan, a measuring tape, a power saw, both regular and Phillips screwdrivers, an electric drill, sandpaper, a hammer, and nails. You can find these items at most hardware and home improvement stores. By taking the measurements of a standard bed, you can choose the wood you will need. For a standard-sized bed you will need two of each of the following frame pieces: 54", 80", 42", and 16". Taking care to wear protective equipment such as safety goggles, a dust mask, and gloves, you can then assemble the frame pieces. Choose your mattress to fit your frame.

Select the type of new mattress you want with care. Some mattresses are much more comfortable on this type of frame than others are. Either a waterbed or a memory foam mattress is considered ideal for a pedestal frame.

A captain's bed is a popular style of pedestal bed frame. Children love them, and they offer a good storage solution for children's rooms which are often small. Drawers can be built into the pedestal base to hold toys or clothing. The space underneath can also be used to hide a trundle bed which will provide a place for a guest to sleep.

There are many different styles of elegant bed frames on the market today made from shiny, beautiful woods or sleek, modern metals. However, you need to consider the size of your bedroom before buying that huge, glamorous bed frame that overwhelms your room when you get it home. Pedestal beds can be built to fit your room perfectly and will provide a great deal of comfort to your life.
